Bryan/UTC students to hear Goldman Sachs executive

The Center for International Development announced today that Goldman Sachs managing director Walt Jackson, '82, will be the guest lecturer at the November 10 Decosimo Lecture Series.
Mr. Dennis Miller, CID Director, coordinated Mr. Jackson's schedule so that both Bryan and University of Tennessee Chattanooga students will have opportunities to attend the lecture. Mr. Miller stated that "Mr. Jackson's rich tapestry of experiences throughout his financial career will provide an intriguing and thought-provoking backdrop for his lecture topic, 'Financing on a Global Scale: An Overview of Investing and Lending in the Current Financing Environment.'"
"We couldn't be more pleased," Mr. Miller added, "that Mr. Jackson will be able to share from his breadth of international financial experience and provide this phenomenal learning opportunity for students on both campuses."

Brief Biography
In his current position in Goldman Sachs' Merchant Banking Division, Mr. Jackson is involved in managing a global debt fund. Following the market correction in 2008, Goldman Sachs Loan Partners (GSLP) was created to invest in the senior secured loans of corporate borrowers, leveraged buyouts and recapitalization transactions. GSLP provided loans to corporate borrowers and financial sponsors during a period when traditional lenders were unwilling or unable to lend.Prior to joining Goldman Sachs in 1997, Walt's career included positions at CS First Boston, Bank of Nova Scotia, and Ernst & Whinney. His expertise includes all aspects of transaction origination, structuring, negotiation, underwriting and syndication. Notable transactions include large corporate bank and bond financings for Ford, Georgia Pacific, Cemex and Owens-Illinois and LBO financings for KKR, PIA, Carlyle, CD&R and TH Lee and Onex.
In addition to earning his bachelor's degree from Bryan College where he focused on business and economics, Mr. Jackson earned an MBA from Georgia State University.
Lecture Summary
Successful financing and investing is often more a function of wisdom than smarts. Lending money and successful investing do require intelligent analysis, but more importantly require wisdom gained from experience. Successful investors like Warren Buffet, George Soros, Seth Klarman and John Paulson have consistently outperformed the market, not because they are smart, but because they are wise.This lecture will provide an overview of the recent financial market turmoil, the current financing environment and an unofficial forecast of the state of the markets. The lecture will also summarize the rules of thumb for successful lending and private investing and how to avoid the pitfalls of bad investment decisions.
