Department of Mathematics/Computer Science
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers courses which cultivate mental habits of accuracy and logical reasoning, develop the ability to communicate ideas in the language of mathematics, foster a knowledge of the place of mathematics in the history of the world, and equip students to use modern computer technology.
Greetings from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science!
Welcome to our portion of the Bryan College website. We hope you enjoy your "virtual tour" of Bryan. Currently there are three faculty members who are full-time in our department:
Dr. Phillip Lestmann, chairman (mathematics) (at Bryan 1977-1986, 1989-present)
Dr. Bob Simpson (mathematics) (at Bryan 1982-present)
Mr. Earl Reed (computer science) (at Bryan 2000-present)
Our department has been offering two tracks in the mathematics major since 1989. One track offers teacher licensure for those interested in teaching at the middle school or high school level. The other track has become the mathematics foundation option, which is a traditional mathematics major. Graduates of Bryan from both tracks have done very well in the job market.
The former mathematics-technology option has been replaced with the applied mathematics and informatics option which is a hybrid curriculum of mathematics and computer science.
New to the department is a cooperative effort between the computer science program and the secondary education department; this is a secondary licensure program in computer science. The secondary education licensure in computer science was effective the fall semester of 2008.
The department has been offering a Computer Science major since 2001. We have also teamed up with the Business Department to offer a major in Management Information Systems.
We are very excited about being in our newly refurbished offices and classrooms. Everything is state-of-the art, including high-tech presentation systems ("smart boards") in every classroom and specially equipped computer laboratories.
We want to encourage you after your website tour to plan an actual visit to our campus. Come see what is going on at Bryan and get to meet our faculty, staff, and students. We believe that you will be very impressed with Bryan as a college and with our department as well.
Feel free to contact us by phone or e-mail--or even in person--if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Phillip Lestmann
Chairman, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
