Department of Music
The Department of Music provides professional preparation for students seeking careers in music or music-related vocations and offers instruction for students seeking life-long learning experiences in music.
Greetings from the Bryan College Music Department! We are excited about your interest in the music program and want to be of help in answering your questions.
One common question many people ask is, "What can you do with a music major?" We love to answer, "Just look at our graduates!"
Many are teaching music on the primary and secondary levels (public and private schools) while others are serving in churches as ministers of music, children's choir directors, or worship leaders. Many are employed in the music industry (recording studio, arts management), and those with strong performance abilities are singing and playing all over the world. Still others have exciting careers outside the music field while finding wonderful opportunities to use their music to enrich their lives and others.
Of course, our students don't have to wait until graduation to do exciting things. Many have experienced playing or singing with a live orchestra (Beethoven's "Ninth") while others fulfill their internships at local radio/TV stations or with the Chattanooga Symphony. Also, our performing groups regularly visit different parts of the country and the world. In March 2008, the Bryan Chorale traveled throughout Florida on its annual tour, singing at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church along the way. Right after graduation, the Chamber Singers left for Califormia to minister in area churches and schools--and soak up a little sun while they were at it. In December, the Fine Arts and Theater programs took 30 students and friends to London for 10 days of sightseeing and experiencing the culture. The Music and Theatre departments combined to present a staged version of Mendelssohn's great Biblical oratorio, Elijah, with full orchestra in November 2008 and Annie Get Your Gun in April 2009.
One of the best things about our major is that we offer many different options so you can custom-design a program that meets your goals and abilities.
If you have a musical dream, check us out.
We just might help you make that dream come true.
In His Service,
Dr. Mel R. Wilhoit
